About Us
The Catholic Women’s League was founded in 1906 by Margaret Fletcher. The League encourages its members to work both in the parish and in the wider community. Members are also concerned with issues on a national and international level.
The Social Awareness Team ensures members’ voices are heard…
…in Social Issues
Health
Justice and Peace
Parliamentary Matters
Relief and Refugee
…in Ecumenism
at Local and National level
in Days of Recollection with women of other faiths
…on the National Stage
through the National Board of Catholic Women
…Internationally
through the World Union of Catholic Women’s Organisations
Another important aspect of our work is meeting in Conference and promoting the Work of the League
Members serve with cheerfulness and work together with a united voice that can really make a difference. Yes, this is the Catholic Women’s League.
A Message from the President -
Mrs Doreen Pooley
July 2008
Dear Members
MY thanks to you all who wrote to MPs on the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill. We must continue to be vigilant and proactive on these issues. Single voices may seem small, but think what we sound like when we all gather together!
I know you are aware of our close association with CAFOD. Therefore, it was felt right for us to support them and send donations for the Burma cyclone and the China earthquake. Please read the reply we have had from CAFOD. It is reassuring to hear how the money is being used.
I also offer my congratulations to our first Branch to reach their centenary! Salford had a wonderful celebration at the Midland hotel in Manchester – where their first meeting was held in 1908! I look forward to the many other Branches that will be celebrating their centenaries in the next few years: Clifton in 2009 and Leeds in 2010. Let us know about your Branch!
In September, Margaret Valentine, myself and eight other member of the CWL will be going to Verona for the WUCWO European Conference. The workshops will be on human trafficking in Europe. After our successful fundraising for the Medaille
Trust, and hearing about their work in England, we are especially interested in hearing what is happening in Europe with this problem. There will be a full report on Verona at the AGM in Scarborough.
Bishop Peter has asked me to thank you and to let you know how much he appreciated all the cards and good wishes you sent on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of his ordination.
Finally, I look forward to seeing many of you at Scarborough in October.
Love and prayers.
Doreen Pooley, National President
Ecclesiastical Adviser - Bishop Peter Doyle
